READ MORE ABOUT OUR CURRICULUM:

Toddlers and Pre-school 1's enjoy, among many other things, listening to songs, engaging in gross motor activities like running and sliding, and playing in small social groups with one another. These activities are not only encouraged in the toddler’s and young two’s rooms; it is an integral part of the curriculum!

When children move to the toddler room, they are ready to express their emerging independence. Our teachers choose activities from our curriculum to help the toddler and young two year old play and learn.

In the Pre-school 1 room, children engage in such activities as circle time, language arts, music, art, and family living. Our circle time activities allow the maturing two year old a new forum for learning. In addition, at this age we begin to introduce a science center, a dramatic play center and a greater choice of art materials for art exploration. >

Common to both classrooms is the amazing increase in new words and phrases to describe the exciting world around them. Language development is a large component of our curriculum. Our activities are designed to meet the needs devleloping children.

In these classrooms, your child’s experiences will include:

Small Group Play & Work

We recognize that children at this stage love to work in small groups. and their attention span is beginning to lengthen too! Using play equipment, our children play and work in small groups at focused activities. These activities help challenge and stimulate the developing toddler or pre-schooler.

Language Development

Many conversations occur in the toddler and pre-schooler classrooms. Fingerplays and songs help supply the words and the rhythm for putting complete sentences together. In addition, we spend time learning about positional concepts, such as up, down, inside, outside, and in front of and in back of. Language is not only necessary, its fun, too!

Thinking and Doing

The children begin to put together ideas about the physical world that build and create a greater understanding of how the world works. Running, jumping, skipping, and climbing are very important activities that occur both on the playground and in classroom activities.

Multiculturalism

We recognize Northern Virginia is rich in multiculturalism. We therefore incorporate within our daily activities, opportunities to experience multiculturalism. This can be found in our literature, music, toys and language. Realizing the importance of introducing foreign language at a young age, Winwood offers a Spanish program.

Home Living

Each week the children play and work learning a different concept or skill about everyday life. These practical skills develop concepts about roles that adults play at home and at work.
