READ MORE ABOUT OUR CURRICULUM:

Children at the ages of three, four and five are ready to become great explorers in the classroom! As far as exploration goes, the sky’s the limit! That’s why we have designed a specifically active program for preschoolers.

At this age children are playing and working to learn language, social skills, pre-math concepts, pre-reading concepts, and concepts about the physical world. We provide an environment for each of these interests to be developed.

In the Pre-school II room, children are learning to make their classroom environment and their world a little more organized. Center play is solidly developed and distinct for each theme. Because the children’s attention shifts quickly, circle time, art time, and focused group activities are kept fun and simple.

The Pre-K's at Winwood Children’s Center are avid discoverers! They are learning that everything in the world has a name, and everything in their classroom has a place! Children are exposed to pre-reading and pre-math skills, foreign language, computers, and other learning activities daily.

We have a scope and sequence chart full of fun activities and challenging experiences which tracks the developmental progression of children. Teachers use our special Winwood curriculum to plan an exciting program for your child.

In these classrooms, your child’s experiences will include:

Learning with Concrete Objects

Children at these ages love to manipulate objects that directly relate to the real world and to their own personal experiences. Our teachers bring into the classroom a wide variety of materials for each unit, making sure that each child has a chance to see, feel, and touch concrete objects that help them learn about their world around them.

Multiculturalism

We recognize Northern Virginia as rich in multiculturalism. We therefore incorporate within our daily activities, opportunities to experience multiculturalism. This can be found in our literature , music, toys, and language. Realizing the importance of introducing a foreign language at a young age, Winwood offers a Spanish program.

The Classroom Environment

Our classroom environment is rich in learning experiences. We focus on helping children value their toys and learning materials. In the classroom, you will find toys designed to help children help children master specific concepts. The environment is structured and organized in such a way that children begin to understand sorting and classifying just by participating in classroom activities!

Home Living

Each week the children play and work at learning a different concept or skill about everyday life. These practical skills develop concepts about the roles adults play at home and at work.
