Private Kindergarten Program

Kindergarten is an exciting time for parents and children alike.  The students are embarking on an educational journey that continues through their high school years.  It is our intent and desire to make sure that we give them a strong foundation intellectually, socially and emotionally.

 Winwood’s Kindergarten program is a full day, hands-on experience in all areas of learning.  Our goal is to help children discover the fun in academics and the importance of being a good social child while progressing in all areas of development.

 Lower Teacher to Child Ratios

At Winwood, we pride ourselves on our low Teacher to child ratios.  A typical classroom would have only 20 students supported by a Teacher and an Assistant Teacher.

Many Winwood Private Kindergarten students are placed in the accelerated program when they begin their Elementary education.  Small group sizes, coupled with individualized attention, ensure a harmonious environment for our advanced curriculum.  At Winwood, we provide opportunities for children to be the best they can be.

 Extended Hours

Extended hours are available to families who require additional care for their children before and after school.  Winwood’s ‘on site’ Before and After School program is both convenient for parents and most of all ‘fun’ for our students.

 Phonics Program

 The Phonics program is based on the Macmillan McGraw’s Beginning to Read Write and Listen®. This program emphasizes the pure consonant sound and the short vowel sounds.  Most of the daily activities are centered on a special letter of the week.  This enables the children to not only learn the letter sound, but to see how it can be used to form words.  We help the children develop a strong vocabulary through the integration of journals, story writing, pen pal letters and spelling tests.

 Math Program

 The math program is based on Math Their Way® and Macmillan McGraw.  With the use of games and manipulative, the children are introduced to numbers, simple math, math pages, fractions, time, geometry, and explore the abstract with more concrete ways.  Many activities are designed to help the children see relationships and to help them better understand mathematical ideas and concepts.  We teach children that numbers are both fun and exciting!

 Science Program

 Science is also a Macmillan McGraw curriculum.  Our science is a hands-on program with daily experiments to open the door to making conclusions.  Introducing the children to problem solving in a fun and relaxed way is an important objective.  Winwood believes that young children learn best through play.  With that in mind our children make slime, race magnet mobiles and discover that there is air pressure all around.  Our goal is to foster a lifetime love of science.

 The Arts

 Winwood believes that children need to be exposed to art and music on a daily basis.  We have an extensive art program that encourages creativity in various media. Our music program combines songs, rhythm, listening and identifying classical music and the use of hand bells.

 Computers

 In today’s technological society, the use of computers in the classroom is a necessity.  The children visit the computer lab for a minimum of a half hour each day.  We start the children learning basic computer skills, then proceed to introducing them to Kid Pix®, a program used for writing stories.

 Social Studies

 Social studies emphasizes cooperation, self-concepts, collecting information and following directions.  With the use of picture books as well as small group activities, we show the children how important it is to be a fair and giving individual.

The major objective of Private Kindergarten at Winwood is to provide a strong academic foundation in education and to assist the children in developing a positive self-image.
