READ MORE ABOUT OUR CURRICULUM:

Our curriculum is designed to strengthen and broaden the emerging intellect of the child. To reach this goal, we have studied prevalent theories in early childhood education, encompassing the wisdom of educators such as Maria Montessori and Reggio Emilia. We have also incorporated into our curriculum the most recent discoveries of the way the young mind learns. Throughout the history of education, the tendency has existed to develop new educational theories and abandon all previous achievements in educational research. In turn, each new theory is forgotten when the next one comes along. We belong to that emerging group of educators who value the positive elements in these various theories.

In our curriculum you will find a combination of only the very best of what educational theory has to offer. When you come to our facility, you might find your child playing with brooms in the "Family Life Zone" or playing a small group game that teaches about the alphabet. And as you look closely, you will see that learning is really what is happening. Your child will be actively involved in playing at learning! We recognize that children learn best when they are having a great time, and fun is an essential component of the Winwood Children’s Center experience.

As you visit, you will also notice that your child is involved in small group learning that focuses on a specific concept or skill. This is part of the Winwood Children’s Center difference! As an integral part of our curriculum, children work throughout each week in very small groups beginning at the age of sixteen months. In these groups, the teacher plays and works with each child at mastering the essential concepts appropriate to the child’s developmental age. At Winwood Children’s Center we believe children experience greater opportunities for learning when playing and working in these small focused groups.

And of course, we maintain a strong emphasis on other important early childhood educational concepts including multiculturalism, self-direction, and developmentally appropriate practices. Don’t be surprised when your child begins to speak to you in Spanish! Our Spanish classes literally bring into the classroom a world of learning, and they provide an opportunity to compare the spectrum of world cultures.

Self-direction is reflected in our classroom layout with distinct "play zones" offering children a wide variety of choices and play experiences. And each activity is matched to the characteristic ages and stages of ability for the group, as well as the individual child.
